Man Sentenced for Killing Girlfriend's 8-Week-Old Baby

Deangelis was sentenced Wednesday to three to 15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter, and three to 10 years for second-degree child abuse.

Former Grosse Ile resident Devin Deangelis was sentenced Wednesday to three to 15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter, and three to 10 years on a charge of second-degree child abuse in the 2010 death of his ex-girlfriend’s 8-week-old daughter, The News-Herald reported.

A jury found Deangelis, 26, of Brownstown Township, guilty Dec. 11 in Wayne County Circuit Court. Judge James Callahan presided over the case.

Deangelis originally was charged with first-degree child abuse and second-degree murder in 2010. He told police that the baby accidentally hit her head on a coffee table while he was changing her diaper.

Isabella Marie Hayes was born with a severe heart condition and had been hospitalized since birth.

Officials initially thought her injury was related to her heart condition. It was later discovered that her skull was fractured, The News-Herald said.

According to police, Deangelis waited six hours before notifying anyone of the baby's injury, the paper said.
