A citizen reported a body in the Detroit River to the U.S. Coast Guard at about 11:50 a.m. Wednesday at the north end of Grosse Ile at Hennepin Point.
Paula Bridges, press director for the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, said the body appeared to be badly decomposed.
A Belle Isle branch of the Coast Guard responded to the call.
The Coast Guard transported the body to an area near the where they met with members of the Wayne County Marine Unit, according to Bridges.
The marine unit officers took charge of the body and were working to identify it at 6 p.m.
The identity is currently unknown, but Bridges said the body appeared to be male and appeared to have been in the water for some time.
The cause of death has not yet been determined.
