The Money Is Under The Mattress, Right?

Do you know of a home invasion in your community? How have your protected your assets?

Lately, I have been seeing more and more news reports both in print and Facebook about break-ins in my community.  Daytime, nighttime -- anytime.  Of course you can lock your doors, install an alarm or get a dog.  Leave lights on 24 hours a day and keep your behavior pattern changing so they can't "track" you.

It is imperative that you make sure your current homeowner's, renter's or condo owner's insurance is accurate.  In regards to theft, most policies have set limits on minimum coverage that will be afforded in case of theft.  Jewelry, guns, collectibles and furs are just a sample of items that may need to be "scheduled" on your policy.  How many people have a wedding ring that would appraise for $2,500 or less?  Guns are usually undervalued on a policy.  Did you list all of your guns -- including the ones for hunting and sport?

By listing the items on your policy, you not only insure them for replacement value but have an up-to-date list when it comes time to make a claim.  Some policies also offer coverage for money theft, credit card fraud and identity theft.

Take a minute this morning when you are drinking your coffee to call your insurance agent to schedule an Annual Review.  It should take about 15-30 minutes and could be the one thing that gives you peace of mind if a break-in occurs.
