Here's the list in no particular order:

  1. The island is home to Gibraltar Bay Alpacas LLC, which sells, boards and breeds alpacas. Yes, alpacas. You have to see it to believe it.
  2. Grosse Ile Municipal Airport was a naval base from 1927 to 1968.
  3. The island does not have a mayor. (As a township, it has a supervisor.)
  4. The speed limit on the island never exceeds 35 mph.
  5. The Grosse Ile Police Department employs 24 police officers.
  6. The Grosse Ile Fire Department employs two people—a chief and a fire marshal. The rest of the firefighters are all volunteers.
  7. There is little to no crime on the island, according to Township Supervisor Brian Loftus. One of the biggest crimes in recent island history happened in June 2009 when a man was arrested immediately after robbing a bank with an implied weapon, according to the .
  8. There are no famous residents on the island. Sure, some have million dollar homes, but none are famous in the most generally acceptable meaning of the word.
  9. Grosse Ile Airport is primarily used for recreational flying and by the occasional business executive.
  10. Grosse Ile Township Schools are consistently ranked among the top 10 in the state, according to Loftus.
