Trenton Residents Call New Mural at Cheeks Bar Offensive, Too Risque

A new mural on an exterior wall at Cheeks Bar has some Trenton residents calling it "offensive" and demanding it be painted over.

Neighbors are complaining about a new mural depicting the silhouettes of two partially nude women bending over on the outside of .

The mural, which went up Friday, covers nearly the entire west side of the exterior of the building.

Some neighbors are saying the mural is inappropriate—even "darn close" to pornography—and should be painted over.

Trenton residents living in the area surrounding on Toledo Street and Julie Drive pass the building on a regular basis. According to one parent, school buses pass the west side of the bar in order to drop off children who live in the area.

Linda Horner, 47, passes the mural nearly every day and said the mural reminds her of something you might see outside of a strip club.

"They are not promoting a bar," Horner said. "There are no strip clubs in Trenton, and we don't want it to look like we have one in our neighborhood."

Jennifer Wheeler, 40, who also lives in the area, said she heard about the mural from her 9-year-old son, Alex, who saw it on the bus home from school.

"He said to me 'Mama did you see the picture on the side of Cheeks? It's naked ladies,'" Wheeler said. "For a 9-year-old to look at a painting on a wall and assume that it's something inappropriate and tell me about it ... you know it's bad."

Horner has a 9-year-old daughter and believes the mural is "darn close" to pornography.

The mayor's office received three complaints on Monday from residents who are unhappy with the mural.

Trenton Mayor Gerald Brown said he contacted the owner of the bar, David Cesarz, and told him the mural is a "public relations nightmare."

Brown said he has not heard back from Cesarz about what he plans to do with the mural.

Cesarz could not be reached for comment.

Brown said the city attorney, Wallace Long, will be taking a look at the mural Wednesday to see if it breaks any laws and if legal action is needed.

Trenton resident Diana Russell, 53, finds the mural to be "risque" and doesn't want her young nieces and nephews to see it. She also worries the mural could continue to get "worse" and be even more offensive.

"I just wonder what else they will put up there," Russell said.

The three women said they want the mural to be painted over and prefer to not have anything painted on the side of the building.

"We're busy people and nothing irritates me that badly," Wheeler said. "This is worth fighting over."

Cheeks was also the scene of an on Sunday.

Update: Cheeks manager Riley Miles said he would cover up the mural.

If you think the mural is offensive & should be removed ...you ought to take a step inside the place . Stopped in there with a group of friends & we couldnt get out of there fast enough ! I cant even believe this place exists in Trenton.

You people need to get off your high horse and get a life. Their are alot of other issues in the city of Trenton rather then worry about some image on a side of a building.
Nikki Tanguay (Serendipity Photography LLC) October 12, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Frank, my kids (and SEVERAL others) pass by this *establishment* EVERY single day both on the way to & from school. I think this IS an issue worth worrying about in the City of Trenton!! It's inappropriate & needs to be removed immediately (no matter what city it's in).
Lori Holcomb October 12, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Cover it up....i'm sure there is a better way to advertise a "sports bar & grill" What about painting the redwings, tigers, lions logos etc.
Kathleen Galletti Underwood October 12, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Caring about your city's image is very important! It influences the type of businesses and residents it will attract.
Janet Vandenabeele October 12, 2011 at 01:51 PM
It's tacky, but hardly offensive. Looks like those famous mudflaps I see every day. It's dangerous for good taste, but hardly a danger to children. There's far more of a business/investment concern here than a public menace.
Lana October 12, 2011 at 02:18 PM
If you don't stand up for something you will allow any kind of filth into your home or community. People have the right to voice their concerns over issues within their community. Well said that it's important to protect our cities image. And yes Frank I'm sure there are other issues that may be more important to you, but that's what makes Trenton so great is that we do have people in this city that do CARE about the community! And sometimes it's the little things that are worth fighting for!

My daughter works there, and painted this logo. She's working her way through community college, we need more businesses like this to help stimulate this slow Michigan economy.
Linda Galletti Horner October 13, 2011 at 12:32 AM
No one is looking to close this facility. All the neighboring community is requesting is: What happens in Cheeks stays IN Cheeks.
Diane October 13, 2011 at 04:38 AM
Paint over it!
Frank October 13, 2011 at 04:39 AM
Yes i live in trenton as well and you people act like trenton is Bloomfield hills or something last time i checked its part of the downriver crapper so again worry about something else im sure your kids have heard and seen alot worse in school. Maybe u should go in the bar and have a drink and take the edge off to lighten up alittle.

It's amazing that with the growing adult film industry in Trenton anyone would worry about the bar wall!
Trenton October 13, 2011 at 01:36 PM
Adam A male adult (hired help) painted this mural. Glad to hear you daughter is going to college. But there are more respectfull jobs out there to help pay for college. Look at the Face Book pics, so sad!!!!!
Nate Stemen (Editor) October 13, 2011 at 02:00 PM
@Bretton Park Resident: We aren't aware of any adult film industry in Trenton. Can you explain what you mean? Has anyone else heard of an adult film industry in Trenton?

When did the blinders go on? When did it become OK to promote nudity on the outside of a building? Where did the moral values of people go? We should be concerned about our city image. Large amounts of people drive by this building every day. Should they be forced to look at that garbage on the building because they have no other choice? What do you tell a bus load of kids- look away? And "Frank" who are you to decide what MY kids have been exposed to? This is the problem- acceptance. We have become too excepting of inappropriate pictures and acts and our children are being forced to grow up far too early.
Linda Galletti Horner October 19, 2011 at 10:54 PM
Kudos to you Christine C. If we don't take a moral stand at the community level this type of inappropriate business practice will get out of control.

I drive in the city of trenton everyday .&& see testicals hanging on the bumper of cars, ...I don't see anything wrong with a soloette of 2 girls on a building. I also work there .&& its nothing but a good time, with good people! Its okk for girls in bikins to run through elizabith park for an event, but you find unfit for a painting to be painted on a buliding. Worry about criminals .&& people who are harming your neighborhood, murders, drug dealers ex. Stop gossiping about a bar that you obviously know nothing about! were a funn, easy going, friendly bar...step off your high horse .&& worry about stuff that needs worrying about. Not some bar with a painting on the building!
Phylicia October 20, 2011 at 05:06 AM
I too work at cheeks and am the person who has been here the longest out of all the employees hitting my year mark next month. I see this on mud flaps and steel plates on the sides of cars. You people talk about morals like we dont have any. Come into the bar obe time and you will see nothing but a fun waitstaff. I mean really what happens in cheeks stays in cheeks. What r u sayin that I am bending over for tips. Both my brothers and my parents come into Cheeks and honestly if we are that provocative that they would come in while im working. I think you guys look for stuff to get pissed about. We are a great bar and it honestly is hurtful you guys wont get off our backs. We do everything you ask and this mural is on all of our cards and flyers even painted inside the bar where btw we are not naked. You make it look like we make trenton look bad. No I went to trenton high school and chose to leave cause all the drugs and stds and vugar laungage running through that place. If you dont like our mural then dont come in but seriously.my back hurts so get off it

Please try to keep the conversation about the issue and refrain from attacking one another personally. Thanks and keep up the conversation.
john October 20, 2011 at 05:16 PM
The people on your blog are attacking the bar if u haven't noticed nate. Unfortunatly the people in trenton have been harrassing the bar since the owner wanted to try to make more money this has been going on for a year now. This is not a surprise to the owner n the manager. The mayor was contacted and we are waiting for a call back. Maybe the women fighting for this so bad should contact the manager or owner instead of harrassing the customers in the parking lot. Would it be better to havr an empty building in trenton.
Nate Stemen (Editor) October 20, 2011 at 05:20 PM
@John: As you read in the article, we have not been able to get the owner or the bar manager on the phone. Do you know them personally. We would very much like to get their side of the story.
john October 20, 2011 at 05:38 PM
The mural is not finished by the way ppl there will be more art added to the wall. There will be more on the wall n the ladies will not stand out so much even though there is nothing wrong with them. The people in this city act as they do nothing wrong or virgin grounds. I mean don't you ppl see balls slapping on truck trails don't u see licence plates that say fck you don't you see the same logo on tshirts on truckers mud flaps? in art musems there's worse then this they have breasts n nipples n let's not forget about the coca hanging out in master pieces that brilliant artists have created. These paintings are widely known taught in schools. Should the work of an artist with his art widely know be shunded n took down as well. Come on ppl there are better things in this city to worry about other then a wall. Your kids are going to learn anatomy in school on a pig fetus n in there school books they show what everything is n how to make the baby . There are so many other issues in the city then this
john October 20, 2011 at 05:40 PM
@ nate I am a very loyal customer to the bar n they should call the bar n leave a number for one of owner or manager to get back to
Bill October 20, 2011 at 05:46 PM
We are not asking for an empty building, we are asking for the mural to be removed. It's the image of the mural that makes the bar seem as if it is something that it's not. What type of owner/manager would want do this to his employees. We have parks and baseball fields that familys have to pass Cheeks.
cori petros October 20, 2011 at 05:50 PM
Christine, maybe if you got your eyes checked, you would clearrlllyyy see no naked picture on the building...its a painting of 2 girls, not naked, get your facts right! Like I said before, its very apparent that you've never set foot in cheeks bar n grill...the staff if friendly .&& dress appropriately, yes we are not in jeans .&& turtle necks...who cares. If you don't like it, or you have kids that you don't want to see it, ...its your choice to not enter the bar. Cheeks is a very great, FUNNNNN bar, for people who want to have a fantastic time .&& experience! Were all doing our jobs as servers .&& staff to serve our costumers .&& to make the walk out happy .&& pummppeed to come back! So how about worry about yourself .&& the things that really matter in life, .&& not a bar that you know absolutely NOTHINNNNGGGG about! Soo for everyone who hasn't given cheeks bar n grill a chance, come on in, enjoy yourself, kick back .&& let our waitstaff show you an amazing time, I promise you, you will not regret it. Don't base it off of these people, who obviously have nothing better to do in life, than jump to conclusions, .&& assume stuff that they know nothing about. <3333
Linda Galletti Horner October 20, 2011 at 07:01 PM
I really think everyone needs to re-read the original article. Neither the owner nor the employees were attacked nor did anyone question the moral standings of the employees. Please do not read more into this than intended.

If you are worried about your children seeing black silhouettes of girls then your children are in real trouble from you and the real world. I feel sorry for any child that has this hovering parent. Where was the nudity? It was a black. Be a good parent and talk to your children and explain the difference between black silhouettes and real girls. There is a huge difference. How do these children make it with parents who can't explain this difference? A few Residents in Trenton obliviously don't watch any tv or they would realize that most commercials have sexy women whom are real and in color. The neighbors who said it was "darn close" to pornography are overreacting to black silhouettes. Wake up and smell the bullcrap! MikeM of G.I.
MikeM November 14, 2011 at 02:51 PM
How can people compare black silhouettes of girls on a bar wall to calling it "promoting nudity"? There is no nude nothing. It was black. Can anybody explain this to me? Christine C, any good parent can explain this to anyone including a bus full of children, why can't you?

I respectfully ignore any public opinions that missed the their/they're/there grammar lesson in elementary school.
