Spray Park Delayed Until 2012 for Water Testing

The new spray park at Elizabeth Park in Trenton will not open in 2011 as expected.

Trenton residents are forced to wait until next year for the at , after months of waiting and inquiring about the new installation's status.

The spray park has suffered previous due to weather and is now being delayed due to water safety testing, according to Beverly Watts, director of Wayne County Parks.

"As you know our goal was to open our first-ever spray water park this summer barring any infrastructural delays, which our contractor has experienced," Watts said. "We are pleased to announce phase one is complete and currently our contractors are testing the water quality to determine the level of water filtration system needed."

The park is expected to open for the 2012 summer season.

Watts said the cost of the project may increase slightly, but the total cost will not be known until testing is complete.

"I know the citizens are anxiously awaiting the opening of this wonderful park, as are we, however, the parks staff along with our county executive (Robert A. Ficano) want to ensure we have the highest quality and safest water spray park even if it causes us to unfortunately miss this summer season," Watts said.

Another project under construction at Elizabeth Park is the Shelter Building. Watts said the building's completion date is expected to be December 2011.

Watts said she does not anticipate any increase in the cost for the building.
