Send Them to Summer Camp in Trenton

Not sure where to ship off the kids for camp once school lets out? Here are our top local picks.

With the choice and variety of summer camps available in southeastern Michigan, boredom won't be an option this summer for your kids. A lot of organizations, from the YMCA to your local parks and recreation department offer dozens of choices for camps, with science, reading, sports, music and more among them. Whether you're looking for an all-around experience or a camp more focused on a particular interest, this list features a few in your town or one very close by. Feel free to add your own, as well:

Type of camp: Football
Cost: $50
Where: 2601 Charlton Road, Trenton
When: June 28-30 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Deadline for registration: June 10, 2011
Details: Individual technique instruction by Trenton High School varsity coaches, offensive and defensive position techniques, small group instruction, Punt, Pass and Kick competition, emphasis on fundamentals of the game, Air Force football games, Perfect Play competition and a camp T-shirt. Campers between first and eighth grades in the fall of 2011 are eligible to attend the camp.

Name: Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center
Type of camp: Fine arts
Cost: Varies depending on number of classes taken, but each class is $70, plus script or material fees
Where: 2447 W. Jefferson, Trenton
When: June 21-July 29 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
Deadline for registration: Registration is available as long as camps are open.
Details: DYPAC offers children anything from theater games to sign language. Ages are 5 and up, and there’s a new program for 13-year-olds and older.

Name: Downriver Family YMCA
Type of camp: General variety
Cost: $162 per week, Monday-Wednesday-Friday option for $120. Membership is required.
Where: 16777 Northline Road, Southgate
When: June 20-Sept. 3, with other classes and camps available between those dates.
Deadline for registration: Registration is available on a week to week basis.
Details: A day camp is offered on a week to week basis with a new theme and field trip every week, but there are other classes and camps offered in the program including aquatics and other youth sports. Follow the link above to explore the options.

Name: Trenton Veterans Memorial Library Summer Reading Program
Type of camp: Reading/educational
Cost: None
Where: 2790 Westfield Road, Trenton
When: June 6 to July 29
Deadline for registration: Registration starts June 6, and the last day to register with the program is July 21.
Details: Both independent readers (grades 1-5) and teen readers (grades 6-12) will be able to log hours to win prizes, including t-shirts and a lawn sign marking their achievement. There are also gatherings at the library throughout the summer for the readers.

Name: Trenton Parks and Recreation Department
Type of camp: Theater/dance
Cost: Varies on age level and resident status
Where: Kennedy Recreation Center, 3101 West Road, Trenton
When: Aug. 8-12
Deadline for registration: None
Details: The city is hosting both a theatre dance camp covering favorites like Hairspray and Lion King, and a princess dance camp, where children can learn ballet, tap, jazz/hip-hop and hula styles of dance.
