Help the Environment with the Detroit River Cleanup

The event has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 30, at Rotary Park.

The Friends of Detroit River is hosting its annual Detroit River Cleanup Saturday, April 30, at 9 a.m. at Rotary Park.

The event was supposed to be held April 16, but the event was rescheduled.

"Unfortunately, due to the bad weather and predicted high winds," said Robert Burns, event coordinator, the event had to be rescheduled.

Volunteers will help clean up the shoreline of the Detroit River and small islands only accessible by boat. They will be cleaning up the uninhabited islands in lower Detroit River, Burns said.

This is the organization's ninth year hosting the cleanup event, Burns said. They will be cleaning up debris and other material that can litter the river.

Orientation begins at 9 a.m. and the volunteers will work until noon. Then a lunch will be served and Burns said they plan to be finished by 1 p.m.

Burns expects to have between 25 to 75 volunteers at the event. "It all depends on the weather," he said.

This cleanup is "one of the ongoing things we do at Friends of the Detroit River," Burns said.

Volunteers are urged to dress for the weather and bring life jackets and gloves if owned.
