Have you ever wondered why some people are living the life of their dreams and others are simply struggling to get by? For some, people were born into money, some work really hard at getting and keeping it and others just plain seem like their lucky in achieving pretty much anything they want.
How does that happen?? Typically it is in the upbringing, but mostly it’s stored in the “subconscious” part of the mind in everyone’s upbringing. Said another way, we are all a product of our environment and what we were surrounded with when we grew up. Thus, what we think about, we bring about. The good news, you can change the ‘old’ thoughts and behaviors…just hang with me here and I’ll tell you how.
For me, being a baby boomer, I can attest to our family growing up in the ‘struggle’ category. Obviously I didn’t know we had a choice at the time. Many times we heard statements like “money doesn’t grow on trees”, “we can’t afford it”, “do you think I’m made of money”, etc. Fortunately, I learned later on in life that we didn’t have to keep these old programs and continue to run them into our adult lives…and neither do you!
The ‘secret’ is, it can be changed once you are aware of how to ‘play the game of life’! Is it simple to do, yes, is it easy – that depends on you. The first thing I would like to say is: be gentle with yourself - you are not alone! We all started out as a product of our environment (the point here is not to blame your parents, grandparents, etc. they likely didn’t know either!) – but with a few tips, you can effectively change your life to get what you want!
So how can you get what YOU want out of life? Well, before we move on, it’s important for me to share one quick bonus tip with you here about the Law of Attraction (LOA). By now I’m sure most of you have heard about the LOA, either from the movie The Secret or simply by living in the world.
As a recap, basically the LOA states that “likes attract like” onto itself – either positive or negative (similar to a magnet). What most people may not be aware of is this Universal Law is working all the time – either way - no exceptions. Just like some of the other Universal Laws like the Law of Gravity, Electricity, Polarity, etc. Even though you may not see these does not mean they are not working…they are.
Now to bring this all together into how you achieve what you desire, start with the following 3 steps and stay tuned for the next two articles in this series to receive a complete process. If you take the time to learn and use the principles below listed below, you can change your life to achieve your goals and dreams!
Let’s jump in with the first 3 elements:
1) Start paying attention to what you are telling yourself on a daily and moment to moment basis. I know this sounds really basic, but so many times we allow our thoughts to steer us in a certain direction.
Are your thoughts positive and uplifting, or are they more on the negative side where you are beating yourself up all day long - hearing a lot of “can’ts”, “I don’t know how”, “I’m not good enough”, etc.?
If you are hearing a lot of negative thoughts, simply release them and let them go. You are not your past and your future can be changed based on the thoughts that you think and the choices that you make. As Henry Ford was quoted as saying:
“Whether you think you can, or you can’t, you are right.”
2) You must first decide what you want. This may also seem so basic, but studies have shown that most people spend more time planning their vacations than they do their lives!
As my mentor and teacher, Jack Canfield, co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul® series and featured in the movie The Secret states: “most people don’t get what they want because they don’t know what they want.”
Take a moment and dream big about what you want. Do this now. Make a list of what you want. Avoid limiting yourself to what you “think” you can have. You are never given a thought or a dream that you do not have the capacity to achieve.
3) Place dates next to each one of these. How much do you want and by when, and then write it down. Get as clear as you possibly can. Clarity is key.
