Sexton said he originally wanted to work for one more year before retiring. However, with large-scale projects on the horizon for the hospital, such as conversion to electronic medical records, he said it would be best to have a successor start ahead of such work, rather than step in and have to take control of ongoing projects.

“When I looked at what was coming, and where health care was headed, and talked with my boss, it just became clear that for the betterment of the hospital, and the system, that I do it now,” Sexton said.

While he was in charge, the hospital acquired property across the street. It was purchased with expansion of the hospital in mind, he said, and that goal still exists.

As for retirement plans, Sexton said he would be moving to Wisconsin to be closer to his children and grandchildren.

The hospital in Wyandotte first opened in 1926. Today it is a 401-bed acute care facility featuring a surgery department, emergency department, birthing center, mental health services and rehabilitation services.

On Oct. 31 a merger was announced between Henry Ford Health System and Beaumont Health System. At a recent City Council meeting, Sexton said the hospital in Wyandotte would remain open and continue operating after the merger.
