Woodhaven Official: Kmart Site Too Small for Costco

Trenton residents had mixed feelings after finding out Costco won't be coming to West Road in Woodhaven.

Woodhaven City Administrator said the Kmart on West Road is too small for a Costco Wednesday.

Mark Kibby commented on a recent Facebook comment alerting Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch readers that the big box store won't be replacing Kmart, which is currently having a store closing sale.

Kibby said Costco stores require 15-16 acres, and the Kmart site is around 11 acres.

Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch Facebook fans had mixed feelings about not getting a Costco near their neighborhood:

  • Angela Tepper: that would have been awesome
  • Tracey Feeback-King: Costco would kill small business in Trenton and Woodhaven. But a Benihana and whole foods are great ideas.
  • Michelle Wakefield Shenton Costco on that corner would make the already bad traffic worse. I would like to see one Downriver though. Thanks for clearing up the rumor. So many people have been telling me a Costco is going in.

The comment received two shares, 6 "likes" and 29 comments.

Many commenters mentioned a potential for medical offices to use the space, but Kibby said it was not likely and not desired by Woodhaven officials.
