West Coin Shop to Reopen After Fire Caused Total Loss

Owner Rusty Hohman, 57, of Romulus, said the Trenton community has helped him through this difficult time by asking to volunteer and giving him gifts.

Crews have worked tirelessly since May 21 to rebuild West Coin Shop after a fire ripped through the building, forcing two other businesses located in the same building to close.

Despite the fire causing a total loss, owner Rusty Hohman, 57, of Romulus, plans to open his doors to the public for the first time in about three months on Aug. 15.

Crews were getting ready to begin putting the finishing touches on the interior of the shop Thursday.

Hohman said after Trenton firefighters extinguished the fire and boarded up the windows and doors, someone broke into West Coin Shop in the night of the fire and stole several items.

"It's one thing to break in and rob guy, but why burn it?" Hohman said. "It takes a special individual that needs to be taken off the street."

Fire Marshal Jeff Evans said the fire was set intentionally, but do not have a suspect in custody. Hohman offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the fire.

Hohman said the Trenton community has helped him through this difficult time. He returned to the shop after the fire to find a vase with a flower inside waiting for him from an anonymous person.

"A lot of people are pulling for us," Hohman said. "People are volunteering for us. The Trenton community is really remarkable, and you don’t know it until something like this happens."
