Rotarians, Businesses Receive Awards

The Trenton Rotary Club and the Trenton Business Association gave out several awards following the State of the City address.

After Mayor Gerald Brown gave the State of the City address last Monday, the attention turned to the Trenton Rotary Club, which honored several community volunteers and businesses with prestigious awards.

Rotary President Lynn Nolan presented the first Rotarian of the Year Award to Bill Jasman for his work as assistant treasurer and grant writer for the club, his community involvement in Goodfellows and St. Vincent De Paul and writing and redesigning the Trenton Rotary newsletter.

“It’s always great to get recognized when you are helping others,” Jasman said. “There’s still many great needs in our community and we are going to try and help.”

Jasman said he was most proud of the work he and other Rotarians have been able to do for kids. He added he is proud that because of his and others’ efforts, people who are in need are getting help.

“It’s just awesome,” Jasman said. “It’s awesome.”

Jasman said the Rotary district grant committee took $65,000 of the Rotary’s money internationally and put it to work in Argentina and Ethiopia to help people in other countries.

“There are Rotarians that are traveling to help with other clubs around the area,” Jasman said. “All I do is sit on the approval board that approve the trips and projects.”

However, Jasman said he does feel that he has earned the award. “I do a lot of work,” Jasman said. “I’ve put in hundreds of hours for the Rotary in the year.”

Some other citizens who have done a lot of work for the city are Jay and Dawn Gulley who received the 2011 Service Above Self Award.

Nolan awarded the Gulleys for their work in the Trenton Public Schools Parent Teacher Association at Anderson and Taylor Elementary Schools and for their work in creating a transition plan for students moving from Taylor to Anderson last year when Taylor was closed.

According to the Trenton Rotary Newsletter, the Gulleys have felt the slump in the economy firsthand and have decided to use their time to help Trenton Public Schools.

School Superintendent John Savel nominated the two for the award.

The Trenton Business Association named Savannah’s as Business of the Year. Cheryl Carr, owner of Savannah's, was present to receive the award.

Savannah’s specializes in steak, seafood and pasta and according to their website, is located in downtown Trenton in a historic house, 2156 West Jefferson.
