Detroit Edison Raises $2,200 for Local Food Pantry and Salvation Army

DTE's Trenton Channel Power Plant and the city of Trenton joined together for their annual Chili Christmas Luncheon.

The Trenton Channel Power Plant and the City of Trenton joined together June 8 and raised over $2,200 at their 14th Annual Chili Christmas Luncheon.

The money raised, with proceeds from lunch sales along with matching funds from DTE Energy, will benefit the Downriver Salvation Army and the Trenton Food Pantry.

The event was held at the power plant. About 150 people attended, including power plant employees, Trenton municipal workers, and local residents.

Those in attendance had the opportunity to vote for their favorite chili, between the Detroit Edison team and the Trenton Fire Department. The Detroit Edison team won with a vote of 101 to 29. The trophy will be given back to them from the fire department, who won last year's competition.

"The Chili Christmas Luncheon reminds people that the food pantry and Downriver Salvation Army need people's donation's year-round, not just in December, because these organizations work year-round to assist people in need," said Madelyn Williams, the liaison between the utility and the communities.

"The plant workers come from the surrounding community and the plant is an important employer and community supporter. (The event is) a great way to connect with the firefighters and public officials while doing something that's fun and for a good cause, " said John Austerberry, DTE's spokesman.

The charity event has raised more than $40,000 to date.
