Quilt Show and Garden Walk Coming to Trenton

Bi-yearly event to highlight Trenton's cultural center and surrounding neighborhoods.

If you’re looking to hone your quilting and gardening skills, look no further than the this Saturday, June 18, at the Trenton Cultural Center. The show is a collaboration between friends who just happened to also be members of the Moonglow Garden Club and Trenton Quilters.

“We jumped at the chance to work with these two groups and showcase our gardens here at the Trenton Cultural Center,” said Joann Perna, assistant director of Trenton Parks & Recreation.

From 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Saturday, show-goers can admire the latest hand-made quilts inspired by some of the best gardens Trenton as to offer.

“It (the show) just became a natural to coordinate our efforts, and Trenton Parks & Recreation was a tremendous help,” said Margaret Stedman, past president of the Moonglow Garden Club. “We thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be neat to join forces?’”

The tour will include six gardens, as well as displays on the grounds of the 1.2 acre Trenton Cultural Center. All proceeds from the event go to charity, funding such initiatives as the Greening of Detroit and the Trenton community vegetable garden, which, last year, yielded 3,000 pounds of produce for local food pantries and a senior center in Trenton.

“To be showcased in this event, we always look for showstoppers,” says Glenda Albright, president of the Moonglow Garden Club. “We found three gardens this year alone by driving and knocking on doors.” The rest of the entries, she adds, were solicited from newspaper ads and word-of-mouth.

Tickets for the garden walk can be purchased in advance for $7 at the recreation office located in Trenton City Hall, Olds Flower Shop of Trenton or Flower Child Herb of Riverview. Tickets are $8 purchased on the day of the event.
