Godspell to Descend Upon Trenton Village Theater This Weekend

Musical based on the Gospel of Matthew comes to Trenton through the weekend.

This weekend, the Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center brings Godspell to the stage.

Written by acclaimed composer Stephen Schwartz, Godspell is a musical based on the Gospel according to Matthew, but it’s not told like you would expect.

“It’s a story you’ve heard before, but not in this way,” said Mary Zaleski, the director of the show. “It’s a heart-warming story about love and compassion.”

It’s a timeless tale of friendship, loyalty and love told through parables from the viewpoint of three characters -- Jesus Christ, John the Baptist & Mary Magdalene, along with an ensemble cast of 22 that’s dressed in everything from a 70’s bride costume, to a hobo. The diversity of the cast on-stage is one of the aspects of this show that make it so unique.

“That’s a fun thing about this show is that we have a lot of leeway,” said Zaleski, who herself is involved in the production of this show for the fifth time in her career.  “Several of our characters also play instruments in the show. That’s kind of a fun thing we’ve done.”
