Faces of DYPAC: Shelly Schutt

Faces of DYPAC is a series of profiles focusing on the people who make up the Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center.

Shelly is a member of DYPAC’s board of directors. In addition, she acts as the curator for the gallery, as well as a costumer. She is a self-professed Jack of all Trades.

Bio

Shelly is originally from Houston, Texas. She moved to Trenton 16 years ago. Trained in the field of dental hygiene, she was looking for work when she met Dr. Noel Jackson. Very shortly after that, Dr. Jackson came up with the idea for a youth theater, and she’s been on board since the beginning.

What did you want to be growing up?

I really wanted to be a dental hygienist since my Dad was a dentist, but I’m just now starting to tap my creative potential through my work with DYPAC.

When did you get involved with DYPAC?

I started at the beginning in 1998. Both of my daughters were in DYPAC, and I stepped in to help out on some productions. After the second show, they found out I could sew. I have sewn for the last 30 years, and I run a dress making business out of my home where we create formal wear for women.

How does DYPAC fulfill you?

It mostly fulfills me through costume. It’s a creative outlet. I love taking a pile of fabric and turning it into something. I also enjoy coming up with entire costume schemes to put everything together. It gets my juices going. I especially like the whimsical designs.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be involved in theater, but I can’t imagine my life without it.

How does DYPAC benefit the community?

It benefits the community in so many ways.

It makes each child absolutely thrilled to be on stage. When we are focused on them – whether a line in a song, or whatever – it makes it seems like it’s all about them.

The people in the community are enriched by seeing theater and coming to a show.
