According to a press release from DTE Energy, the hum is caused “when mainly fresh air used to move coal ash through a collection system is released through an exhaust pipe.”

To reduce the volume of the sound, the plant will install a muffler on the exhaust pipe.

Despite the sound, DTE said there is no danger to residents or workers at the plant.

The air will not cause additional emissions from the plant and that the air is simply exhaust that must be released. DTE compared the process to a vacuum cleaner when air goes in one side to help suck in the dirt and then goes out the other side.

The planned maintenance began Saturday, May 11, and is scheduled to last until Sunday, May 19.
