Trenton Area Church Has Been Using Iconic Sign for Nearly 30 Years

The Woodhaven Bible Church uses a sign along West Road to send unique messages to drivers entering and leaving Trenton.

Pastor Greg Hands, 62, began using the Woodhaven Bible Church sign along West Road as a way to reach people in 1984.

Whether it's a witty joke, interesting fact or profound statement the sign has been used to inspire passers-by for nearly 30 years.

"I don't really make them up," Hands said. "I really just find or discover them."

Each week, weather permitting, a team of church members take down one witticism and replace it with another.

Hands said he finds content for the sign in magazines, emails and newsletters. The church has a stock pile of thousands of different sayings ready to go at a moments notice.

The most difficult part about updating the sign each week is getting the quip to fit on the sign, according to Hands. Twitter users have it easy at 140 characters. Hands has to shrink each quip to just 48 characters.

The unique approach to sending a biblical message has attracted more than just drivers on West Road.

"Other churches ask for our sayings and we gladly share them," Hands said.
