Red Cross Blood Drive to Benefit Community, RHS Student

A Riverview Community High School senior will celebrate her birthday by raising blood donations for the American Red Cross.

Riverview Community High School Senior Rachel Helstowski is spending her 18th birthday at in Trenton collecting blood donations for the American Red Cross.

The blood drive will be held Wednesday, June 15, from 1-7 p.m.

While collecting donations to help those in need, she will be earning scholarship money. Helstowski will receive $500 or more for her schooling depending on how many people donate blood.

Helstowski said they currently have "about 45 people" signed up to donate.

She will be attending Eastern Michigan University in the fall to study elementary education and special education.The scholarship money raised during the blood drive will help her pursue a career that involves working with children.

Helstowski believes the best part about giving back to her community by holding this blood drive is "knowing how many people you're helping and the difference you're making," she said.

People who are at least 16 years old and in good health are eligible to donate blood.

There will be birthday cake and prizes available at the blood drive, as well.

"It would be better to have an appointment, but walk-ins are fine as well," she said.

The church is located at 2530 Charlton Road in Trenton.
