Price of Stamps Could Increase Next Year

The U.S. Postal Service is proposing a 3-cent increase to the price starting in January.

The postal Board of Governors said Wednesday it wants to raise the price of a first-class stamp by 3 cents, according to the Associated Press. The increase would bring the cost to 49 cents.

The story said the board cited the agency's "precarious financial condition" and the uncertain prospects for postal overhaul legislation in Congress.

Forever stamps bought before an increase still would cover first-class postage. The price of new forever stamps would be at the higher rate, if approved.

The agency said the post office would reconsider its rate request if Congress passes legislation to put its finances back on track.

The stamp currently costs 46 cents. The last increase was a 1-cent increase in January 2013.
