Marshmallow Drop Draws Hundreds to Elizabeth Park in Trenton

Once each year, marshmallows are considered valuable currency at Elizabeth Park in Trenton.

Children chased down more than 20,000 marshmallows dropped from a helicopter and exchanged them for prizes Friday during the annual Marshmallow Drop.

Hundreds of children marched into an open field on a desperate hunt for the soft, sweet spheres, while parents like Jenna Graves and Stephanie Springer of Wyandotte watched from a safe distance.

"I liked it," Graves' 3-year-old daughter Payton said. "It dropped a lot of marshmallows."

Springer's daughter Madison, 2, had a bucket filled with at least "1 million" marshmallows.

Children bearing marshmallows, and those without, received an activity set including an Easter-themed coloring book, sketch pad and crayons.

The event began 29 years ago and is sponsored by Wayne County Parks and the Trenton Exchange Club.
