Haas Park Project Delayed in Trenton

Trenton received $50,000 from Wayne County for a project at Haas Park, which would include a new shelter and playground equipment.

A project planned for Haas Park in Trenton won't continue as planned after city officials delayed the project due to lack of funding.

Joann Perna, director of parks and recreation, said the initial plan to build a new shelter and playground equipment far exceeds the amount of funding available for the project.

Trenton received a grant for $50,000 from Wayne County for the project, but Perna said it could cost nearly double the amount received.

Trenton officials are in the process of applying for a passport grant from the Michigan Department of Natural resources in the amount of $45,000.

The funds would come from donations made to the DNR when Michigan residents renew license plates for vehicles.

"We're looking to maximize the dollars we already have," Perna said.

If the city receives additional funding, Perna said the Haas Park plan might also include new pathways connecting major points around the park including the baseball field and new playground equipment.

The plan would place new playground equipment closer to the location of the former Haas Park Building, which was demolished last year.

Perna said, if all goes well and the city receives the full funding request, work would begin in late October and would be completed in spring 2014.

Perna said she did not wish to speculate as to the plan if the city does not receive additional funding.

"We want to provide a place where neighbors can come and gather as a community," Perna said.
