Former Grosse Ile resident Emily Schaller began her battle with cystic fibrosis when she was a young child. Doctors told her she would likely not live long enough to graduate high school.
Since her diagnosis, Schaller graduated from Grosse Ile High School in 2000, created a foundation dedicated to increasing the quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis called Rock CF and began an annual half marathon that takes place on the island.
The Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon is set for March 24 and registration has already begun.
"Our registration numbers are ahead of last year so we are expecting a great crowd of runners,"Schaller said. "Lots of runners with cystic fibrosis will be there too."
The race begins at 8 a.m. at Grosse Ile Middle School and finishes at the Grosse Ile High School track.
While the signature focus of the race is the half marathon, the event also offers a two-person half marathon relay, a 5K and a kids run.
