2 Trenton Students Receive Voice of Democracy Scholarships

Each year the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Trenton award Voice of Democracy Scholarships for students to use toward college.

Trenton High School seniors Jacob Schoon and Gabe Wykle were awarded Voice of Democracy Scholarships Friday from the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Trenton.

While the value of the scholarships was kept private by Trenton High School staff, they will help fund college for both students.

Schoon and Wykle won the awards after they submitted an essay, and a voice recording of the essay, about why the constitution is still relevant.

Jacob Schoon has been invited to go forward in the competition to compete for an even larger scholarship award at the district level, according to Angela Siggia, a counselor at the high school.

"We wish him luck," Siggia said in an email to Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch.

Richard Williams and Randine Scheffler of the Trenton VFW presented the awards to the students in the main office at the high school.

A date for the upcoming district competition had not been determined Wednesday.
