Township officials said the investigation into James Farrell's death continued Friday, with no immediate end in sight.

Farrell was buried under nearly two feet of mud and water for nearly 14 minutes after a trench dug to fix a broken water main collapsed on top of him on Jan. 24. He died four days later at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Township Supervisor Brian Loftus said he and other township officials received an oral briefing on the investigation early this week, but could not discuss details discussed in the briefing.

Officials from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) are conducting the investigation to find out what caused the trench to collapse.

Patty Meyer, director of the construction safety and health division of MIOSHA, said she could not discuss the investigation until after it is complete.

Loftus said a final written report could be anywhere from 30 to 90 days away, and, until then, he cannot discuss the investigation.

"There's nothing that we can act on because we don’t have the final written report," Loftus said.
