Some high school sophomores spend their free time at the mall or watching television -- not Trenton High School sophomore Gabrielle Herin.

Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack and city council members honored Herin Monday after she was awarded the Silver Congressional Award Metal for her volunteer work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Herin has accumulated over 400 volunteer hours with the fish and wildlife service.

Herin received the award from Congressman John Dingell at the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance Annual Benefit Dinner on May 5, 2012.

Stack said she ran into Herin at Trenton's wildlife refuge on Fighting Island and learned of her achievements.

"I thought it would be nice to honor her here at city hall," Stack said.

Herin introduced her family and said there is still much work to be done at the refuge.

"We've been working on tree planting at the refuge ... we're just trying to revitalize the refuge gateway," Herin said.

She added she and other volunteers plan to turn an old brownfield property into a sanctuary and forest for local wildlife.
