Trenton Loses to Wyandotte 42-7
Wyandotte Roosevelt scored six first-half touchdowns Friday night.
The Trenton Trojans (0-3) took on the Wyandotte Bears and lost by a score of 42-7.
It was a contest that was decided by halftime, as the unbeaten Bears (3-0) had already scored all six of their touchdowns before the teams headed to the locker rooms.
To start the game, Wyandotte’s defense immediately halted the Trojans on their first drive, then blocked the ensuing punt attempt and quickly put seven points on the board.
With Roosevelt set up just inside Trenton territory after the blocked punt, quarterback Kevin Matejko hit receiver Brandon Sowards with a 30-yard pass. Three plays later, Matejko scored on a quarterback keeper at the 7:19 mark, putting the visitors up 7-0 after Jacob Simpson’s successful extra point kick. Simpson was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra point attempts.
In the next four minutes, Wyandotte was able to strike two more times, both on the first play from scrimmage after regaining possession.
The first touchdown came courtesy of a 40-yard scamper by running back Jakob Zanski. About two minutes later, Matejko hooked up with Sowards for a 32-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bears a 21-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Wyandotte running back D’Aries Davis got into the act, first taking off for a 42-yard run deep into Trenton territory, then two plays later hitting paydirt with a run from 12 yards out.
Before Davis’ score, however, the game had been held up about 20 minutes due to what appeared to be a neck injury suffered by Trenton’s Jeremy Horst. He was taken from the field on a stretcher by medical staff, but the Trojans’ coaching staff reported after the game that a serious injury did not occur.
With the ball back, Trenton scored its lone touchdown at 7:45 of the second quarter after Chase Abraham took off for a 53-yard run to the end zone.
Roosevelt answered immediately, however, and on the ensuing kickoff, Sowards struck again. This time, the junior was in position to return the Trojans’ kick and took it all the way back for a 93-yard touchdown.
Capping the scoring for the night was Roosevelt receiver Devan Stewart, who caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Matejko just as time expired in the half.
