The ice at Kennedy Recreation Center will be heating up as the Dearborn Fire Department take on the Detroit Fire Department in a charity hockey game to support Friends of Firefighters.

The game begins at 8:20 p.m. Sept. 21 and all are welcome to attend.

Dearborn Firefighter Matt Mattern said attendees can donate any amount of money for admission to the game.

T-shirts will be available for purchase from the Dearborn Firefighters Burn Drive, which is a non-profit charity that aids the needy in the Dearborn community and burn victims at hospitals across southeastern Michigan.

Mattern said he is looking into creating a partnership for the day with Legends 1926 Bar and Grill for additional charity revenue. Legends was closed recently due to renovations, but is expected to re-open before the charity hockey game.

Friends of Firefighters is a charity organization dedicated to addressing the physical, mental health, and wellness needs of New York City’s firefighters and their families, according to the organization website.

"They offer professional counseling as well as peer counseling to those firefighters who do not want to talk to a professional but (instead) feel more comfortable talking to another firefighter," Mattern said.

He added, several Dearborn Firefighters plan a trip to New York to personally deliver the money raised at the game to the organization at Ground Zero.
