Grosse Ile Employee Injured in Cave-in Dies

James Farrell, Grosse Ile resident and public works employee, died at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Monday night.

 

Grosse Ile Department of Public Works employee James Farrell, who was injured on the job in a cave-in last week, died Monday night, according to Township Supervisor Brian Loftus.

Farrell was 56.

Trenton public safety officials said Farrell was buried under nearly two feet of mud and water for nearly 14 minutes after a trench dug to fix a broken water main collapsed Thursday morning.

Farrell was airlifted to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where he remained until his death.

"Jim was just a genuinely good guy," Loftus said.

Grosse Ile Township officials plan to release a statement regarding Farrell on Tuesday.

Hosptial officials also confirmed Farrell's death.

sorry this had to happen, but why weren't the sides of the trench shored up to prevent this from happening? where was the safety supervisor?

This is so sad but the reality of such accidents. Now the family suffers the loss of a loved one. Co-workers and friends have to deal with this devastating loss. The investigation continues and the township will have to answer how and why this send photos of accident occurred. My sincerely thoughts and prayers to the family and friends.
