"There's no better place to sign a bill like this than here," Gov. Rick Snyder said, while standing outside the Trenton Fire Department.

Snyder visited Trenton Fire Station 1 Monday afternoon to sign a bill that helps prevent an Internet based crime called "swatting."

"Swatting" is a crime in which a person uses the Internet to report a serious crime or medical emergency in progress using "spoofing" technology, so that the report appears to be originating from another address, according to Anna Heaton of the House Majority Communications department for the Michigan House of Representatives.

"If they (emergency responders) get called away on a false call, other things could be going on where they are really needed," Snyder said.

Snyder said House Bill 5432 had broad bipartisan support.
