Five Questions With a Trenton Business Owner: Slick Disc Music

This week we spoke to Rob Slykerman, owner of Slick Disc Music.

Patch freelancer Frank Wladyslawski has been buzzing around Trenton speaking to local business owners and asking them the same basic five questions.

This week Frank caught up with Rob Slykerman, owner of the store Slick Disc Music.

The store, which has been in business more than two decades, carries CDs, DVDs, used vinyl, clothing, incense items and guitar accessories.

Originally the shop was located west of Fort Street, on West Road. However, it  now sits just east of Fort Street, still on West Road.

When Slykerman is not running the store, he plays in a local band known as Fusion.

Slick Disc Music is located at 1625 West Road, about one block east of the intersection of Fort and West.

Here are the five questions we asked Slykerman, followed by his responses:

When did you open?

“About ’88...”

How long have you been at your current site?

“About eight years, February will be eight years.”

How did you get involved in the music business?

“I used to do music retail for Harmony House, that was one of (the) first jobs that I ever had. I also play in a band, so music is pretty much what I do.”

What do you think makes your store unique, compared to other stores that sell similar items?

“One-of-a-kind merchandise and hard-to-find stuff.”

Do you plan on staying in Trenton? What keeps you in Trenton?

"Yes"

“Just grew up Downriver, and Trenton at the time was the place to be, (on) West Road.”
