5 Questions With a Trenton Business Owner: Trenton Jewelers
Trenton Patch editor Nate Stemen sat down with Wayne McDermitt, owner and jewelry designer at Trenton Jewelers to talk about his building's new exterior and his love for Trenton.

A recent update to the exterior of Trenton Jewelers has shed new light on a Trenton business that has been doing business in the community for over 75 years.
In honor of the update, Wayne McDermitt, Trenton Jewelers owner and jewelry designer, sat down with Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch editor Nate Stemen to help reintroduce the business to the neighborhood.
McDermitt has lived in the Downriver area his entire life and said the City of Trenton is the perfect place for his business, and he wouldn't consider doing business anywhere else.
Here are the questions followed by McDermitt's answers:
When did you open?
"Trenton Jewelers has been in business since 1936. I got started working here 41 years ago.
How did you get involved in the business?
"(It's a) family business."
What do you offer that's unique to Trenton Jewelers?
We manufacture jewelry right here in our store. We have the largest loose gemstone collection in southeastern Michigan. We're voted the number one jeweler in the Downriver area. We handle Hearts and Arrows which is the finest cut that money can by -- in diamonds. We have the finest shop facilities in southeastern Michigan. We specialize in original and custom designs.
Why Trenton? Being that you have had great success, you could transition that success virtually anywhere? Why stay in Trenton?
"I have strong roots in the area. I feel that Trenton and the Downriver community is the very best place that I could possibly be.
"We have a wonderful school system. We have a low crime rate. We have educated people. We have good median income and we have people that appreciate what I do."
What sets you apart from other jewelers?
"We take a personal interest in each and every customer that comes through our door and we custom tailor the pieces that we do to specifically satisfy their needs and requirements."

Congratulations on a successful business. As a very frequent customer, I decided to take my business elsewhere. I must say, the majority of the sales personnel were helpful and pleasant, but on the other hand, there were some that were rude and arrogant,which in turn, i found another jeweler. After reading your article I can see you are very proud of your city. That is great! Everyone should take pride in their city because each city has something to offer. I also belive that you need to take off the rose colored glasses you wear. There are better school systems elsewhere, and there are educated people elsewhere. That is great that your crime rate is so low, but again, there are places that it is lower. Crime happens everywhere. For what it is worth, you might want to get spell check. "Fee" is spelled "feel" and if I were an English teacher,the article you wrote would be my worse nighmare. You might want to think about a ghost writer next time you are interviewed. Then again, people are educated.

Thanks Rick. You are absolutely right! I don't pride myself on thinking I am the best. His statements were a little pompous and I would have expected his comments to be flawless.

Trenton Jewelers has always treated our family with respect and fairness. My wife bought me a wonderful watch as a wedding gift, way back in 1986 and it is a Bulova, made of rose gold from the 1940's. This watch was NOS (new old stock) and Trenton Jewelers sold it to Beth at a very fair price and it's a unique and beautiful watch!
