Downriver Doctors Recognized as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Champions
Southgate Surgery Center proudly recognizes general surgeon, Sham Gupta, M.D. and gastroenterologists, Sudarshan Singal, M.D. and Stephen Watts, M.D. for their generous contributions to patients in need during the National 2012 Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Each physician partnered with Southgate Surgery Center to donate colonoscopy screenings throughout the month of March.
“Our doctors are true champions and they deserve recognition. They asked if we would join them in repeating our 2011 program and we were very happy to oblige them this year. We reached out and qualified 18 people that our healthcare system’s ‘safety net' continues to miss,” said Linda Phillips, R.N. and Administrator of Southgate Surgery Center. For those at high-risk of colorectal cancer, the group missing the safety net is aged 50-64, uninsured, too young to qualify for Medicare, has income that is too low to afford paying cash for medical care, but too high to qualify for Medicaid.
Phillips continues, “We commend our partner-physicians for their leadership in bringing this outreach program to the community, raising awareness about the life-saving potential of colorectal cancer screenings and significantly contributing to the health of the underserved.”
